Pakistan has also been affected by disruptions in global fuel supply following the US and Israeli attacks on Iran.

After an increase of Rs55 per litre in the prices of diesel and petrol, Pakistan Railways has also raised its fares.

Karachi: The increase in fuel prices in the country has been made due to rising prices in the international market. The price of petrol and diesel has been increased by Rs55 per litre, pushing the price of petrol to over Rs321 per litre and diesel to more than Rs335 per litre.

Following the hike, Pakistan Railways has also announced an increase in its fares. According to railway officials, train fares have been raised after a 20% increase in diesel prices.

Pakistan Railways has increased economy class fares by 5% and air-conditioned (AC) class fares by 10%. A railway spokesperson said the department will bear the additional burden of other operational expenses and extra costs related to passenger train operations.

Meanwhile, freight train charges have been increased by 20%. The new fares will come into effect from Monday, March 9, for both passenger and freight trains. Passengers who have already booked their tickets will not be affected by the increase.

Officials said that after the surge in diesel prices, an increase in train fares had become unavoidable.
