Consumers shift towards 660cc and hybrid options as petrol costs strain household budgets
Suzuki Alto, Daihatsu Mira lead market as buyers prioritize mileage over performance
As fuel prices continue to rise across Pakistan, the country’s auto market is witnessing a clear shift in consumer behavior, with buyers increasingly prioritizing fuel efficiency over engine power and luxury features.
Industry trends in 2026 show that small-engine vehicles—particularly 660cc hatchbacks—are gaining strong traction, especially in urban centers like Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad, where daily commuting costs have surged significantly.
Among the top contenders, the Suzuki Alto remains the dominant choice for budget-conscious buyers. With an average fuel consumption of around 18–22 km per litre, it has become a preferred option for daily city commuting amid escalating petrol prices.
Auto analysts note that the Alto’s affordability, low maintenance cost, and widespread availability of spare parts further strengthen its position in a price-sensitive market.
Closely following are imported Japanese models such as the Daihatsu Mira and Nissan Dayz, which are increasingly popular due to their superior fuel efficiency and advanced features. The Mira, in particular, stands out with its Eco-Idle technology, delivering up to 35 km per litre under optimal conditions—making it one of the most fuel-efficient options currently available in Pakistan. Meanwhile, the Suzuki WagonR, powered by a 1000cc engine, offers a balanced mix of performance and economy, with an average of 14–18 km per litre, catering to consumers who require slightly more power for intercity travel.
Fuel Price Pressure Driving Market Shift
With petrol prices remaining volatile, automobile buyers are increasingly calculating long-term running costs rather than upfront purchase prices. Market observers say this shift is reshaping purchasing decisions, particularly among middle-income households.
“Fuel efficiency is no longer a feature—it’s a necessity,” said an auto market analyst, noting that many buyers are even downsizing from sedans to compact hatchbacks to reduce monthly fuel expenses.
Urban Mobility Trends Changing
The rise in fuel-efficient cars also reflects broader changes in urban mobility patterns. Traffic congestion in major cities has made smaller, lightweight vehicles more practical, as they offer better mileage in stop-and-go conditions.
Experts suggest that if fuel prices continue their upward trajectory, Pakistan may also see increased demand for hybrid and electric vehicles in the coming years.
